These empty nesters were looking for an updated Contemporary kitchen in Deerfield IL but wanted it to feel warm and calm and serene. Nancy immediately had the perfect vision for them. The first cabinet finish she showed them was exactly right. Durasupreme straight grain oak slab in a Cashew stain adorns most of the cabinetry for the perfect contemporary yet warm feel. Sand matte back painted glass doors with aluminum frames in a graphite finish add a little contrast to the design. Ironsbridge countertops by Cambria enhance the sense of calm, reminding the homeowners of waves in water or shifting sands. A beautiful waterfall edge on the peninsula between the kitchen and breakfast room is the icing on the cake for a finished look.
The peninsula has seating for three and the new island has seating for two. Originally, one of the homeowners sat at the old island frequently so she wanted seating at her new island. Now she reports that she prefers the peninsula seating so she can look at her beautiful new kitchen. The new island is large and extremely functional. It boasts a charging drawer, a specialty knife drawer, a spice drawer, and pullout double waste bins. But that’s not all! It has a Cove paneled dishwasher, a Kohler sink with built in accessories, a dinnerware drawer, vertical storage for trays and platters, and pullout storage for all of the homeowners’ serving ware.
On the far wall of the kitchen, we removed an awkward desk area in order to expand the cooking area. The original refrigerator stuck out awkwardly in the kitchen and was deep in the kitchen. By moving the refrigerator to the near end of the far wall, we keep the cooking zone free of traffic from visitors only seeking a drink or a quick snack. Cabinetry panels on the Sub Zero continues the calm Cashew stain.
The original kitchen had a small cooking area. In addition, a low microwave hood made cooking uncomfortable. Now they have a much more generous cooking area. This kitchen has a Wolf gas cooktop, a Wolf convection steam oven and a Wolf microwave drawer. Directly across from the steam oven are 30” Wolf double ovens for a total of four, count them, FOUR ovens! Topping the double ovens are cabinets with vertical storage for cookie sheets, making baking a breeze.
But the pièce de résistance in the new kitchen is the dedicated coffee station behind bifold doors. One of the homeowners is an avid coffee drinker and her husband loves his teas. The old, bulky peninsula was covered with all of their beverage supplies. They wanted their supplies easily accessible yet able to be closed away when not in use. Now they have this beautiful and functional coffee station! The space between the bottom shelf and the next shelf is higher than usual to provide the perfect height for their espresso machine. The shelves and drawers provide storage for all of the necessary accessories for their coffee and tea making needs at their fingertips and can be closed up for a seamless cabinetry look when not in use. We enjoyed every step of this project and are so happy that the homeowners love their new Contemporary kitchen in Deerfield IL!
