Sustainable Kitchen Remodel in Wilmette, IL

This kitchen remodel in Wilmette, IL began when a homeowner undertaking a major property rehab was referred to Kitchen Design Partners by her architect. The homeowners envisioned a no-fuss transitional farmhouse style, with sustainability at the heart of every decision. Both the architect and general contractor were well versed in sustainable building practices, creating a collaborative team aligned around environmentally responsible design. From material selections to energy efficiency, the goal was to create a space that reflected the homeowners’ environmental values while supporting the way their family lives every day.

Our work included the kitchen, pantry, beverage center, and primary bath. As we always do, we began by meeting with the homeowner to understand her family’s needs, lifestyle, sustainability priorities, and overall vision. Because portions of the kitchen, pantry, and beverage center were part of a new addition, we coordinated closely with the general contractor and developed detailed plans to ensure seamless integration with the existing structure.

The kitchen features semi-custom cabinetry with white quartersawn oak panel doors in three finishes, integrated appliance panels, and furniture-inspired detailing to achieve a transitional farmhouse aesthetic. Glass door wall cabinets on the countertops frame the window and reinforce the farmhouse feel. The large island is centered on the window with perfectly placed pendants overhead, creating a strong sense of symmetry. A Brizo bridge faucet and Kohler apron front sink further enhance the understated farmhouse style.

All appliances, sourced in collaboration with a local appliance specialist, are Energy Star rated Thermador models. We designed custom refrigerator/freezer panels to resemble a door with two drawers below, though the drawers were integrated into one full door panel on each side. This added to the farmhouse style while allowing the homeowners the specific refrigerator they preferred. We also designed select cabinetry panels, including the dishwasher, to mimic drawer fronts, reinforcing the balanced and furniture-like appearance the homeowners desired.

Sustainability guided every decision. The home was converted to all electric, incorporating Energy Star appliances and LED lighting throughout. We prioritized American-made and Midwestern sourced cabinetry and countertops, selected plywood construction with minimal emissions, and adhered to KCMA quality guidelines while reducing transportation impact.

Our hands-on involvement and attention to every detail ensured this new open concept kitchen blends seamlessly and symmetrically with surrounding rooms, truly making it the heart of the home while fulfilling the homeowner’s vision with precision, beauty, and lasting quality.
