This traditional kitchen remodel in Northbrook, IL reimagined an existing footprint to create a more open, balanced, and highly functional space while honoring the home’s classic character.
The original kitchen featured a curved, two-tiered peninsula that limited workflow and closed off the space from the breakfast room. Dated, stain-wood cabinetry made the kitchen feel dark and enclosed. The original design lacked symmetry, visual openness, and efficient zones for cooking, cleanup, and daily routines.
By removing the peninsula and reworking the layout, the new design dramatically improves flow and sightlines while maintaining the original footprint. The result is a kitchen that feels significantly larger and more connected to surrounding living spaces. The homeowners selected antique white perimeter cabinetry and backsplash tile that brightens the space. A large, contrasting stained-wood island adds warmth and anchors the space. A handcrafted, acid-washed zinc hood with polished nickel accents created by a local artisan serves as a striking focal point.
A fully concealed custom coffee bar was a top priority in this remodel. In the original kitchen, the homeowner’s huge but beloved coffee maker took up valuable countertop space and created clutter. We designed a dedicated coffee bar cabinet that closes up when not in use, keeping the kitchen tidy and organized.
The large central island is designed for both beauty and performance, featuring a centrally located sink aligned perfectly with the range and custom hood for visual symmetry. The island includes two waste and recycling pullouts, the dishwasher, pullout for cutting boards, and seating for three.
Kitchen Design Partners also custom designed a furniture-style buffet cabinet with lots of pretty, traditional details such as tulip feet, moldings, and a Grothouse wood countertop finished with a Durata® waterproof surface.
This thoughtful planning, combined with layered traditional details and modern functionality, results in a kitchen that feels timeless, welcoming, and perfectly suited to its homeowners.
