When a young couple who both grew up in rural country found this truly unique home and property in Bannockburn, it was love at first sight. The house was beautiful with many custom features but the finishes were dated. The kitchen layout had a few bottlenecks and the existing appliances were too small for the large space. The new homeowners were determined to create a custom kitchen that was as special as their new home deserved and reflected their lifestyle. They turned to us at KDP and Interior Designer Elizabeth Scott Design Group to make their remodel design dreams come true.

BEFORE:

The original kitchen (above) had a small island and tiered peninsula that closed off the working part of the kitchen from the dining room and created a few bottlenecks. An entire wall was underutilized with full height windows and display cabinets.

AFTER:

Wow! What a difference a new layout and materials make! First, we eliminated the peninsula and centered the new design around a dramatic kitchen island. Custom-made paint and Walnut cabinets anchor the space. We commissioned an artisan-crafted hood that is a “work of art” and we upgraded all the appliances and provided custom features at every turn. We added Dolce Vita Quartzite countertops and full height backsplash to add the feel of sky and clouds that the homeowners love. Island seating allows for eating in the kitchen and visiting across the island with the cook(s). We also installed a smaller window along the back wall and created a baking center with conventional and specialty ovens that is as functional as it is gorgeous (below). Read on for a detailed look inside this Bespoke Beauty.

The homeowners selected custom-made Inset cabinets from our KDP Dream Collection in a stunning combination of contrasting finishes. Our custom cabinet maker’s attention to detail matched the walnut grain pattern on each drawer and door to line up beautifully. Only a custom cabinet maker who will select material in such a genuine manner can provide this level of detail. We are so pleased with the results. Let’s peek inside …

The custom hood we commissioned is a masterpiece, commissioned from a Chicago-based artisan who crafts hoods for international clients. This hood was crafted from sanded nickel with brushed brass. The lovely Dolce Vita Quartzite countertops and full height backsplash perfectly complement the custom hood. We mentioned that this island is huge, but the size is hard to capture in photos. The island is a whopping 12 feet long and among its many features, it accommodates this 5-foot-long Galley Sink with two faucets and a filtered hot/cold water dispenser. Dual dishwashers behind cabinet panels are convenient to the cleanup zone.

While the center of the island has quartzite countertops, the ends have custom walnut butcherblock tops by Grothouse, with food-safe oil so it they are truly intended to be cut on safely. Since the homeowners both grew up in farming communities, they developed a deep love of nature and fresh, healthful food. They wanted the style and function of the kitchen to reflect their rural beginnings. The custom artwork on the wall executed by Elizabeth Scott is a super cool photograph of the homeowners’ most beloved dairy cow from the family farm that has an abstract quality.

After installing a smaller window to better utilize the far wall of the kitchen, we created a custom baking center specifically designed to facilitate the homeowners’ love of cooking meals that are healthy, delicious, and beautiful.

A built-in oven, vacuum seal drawer with sous vide cooking, a steam convection oven, and a microwave oven accommodate a variety of cooking styles to create masterpiece meals in healthy ways. A warming drawer keeps food piping hot during cooking or for a family member arriving home late. Look at all the pullouts and drawers, even utilizing the narrow spaces between ovens. KDP loves to make every inch of available space into functional storage. Notice the beautifully stained walnut interiors. These cabinets are as pretty on the inside as they are outside!

The tall white cabinets nearest the baking zone above are designed partly as pantry storage but also hold more custom features.

The homeowners have several small appliances that are used frequently so the countertop space can be open and available when the kitchen is in use or closed behind doors when not needed. The pocket doors, designed to recess into the cabinetry when open, make standing and working at these cabinets so comfortable. (Notice the gorgeous walnut interior again!) Matching quartzite countertops are in the cabinet base. Some of the cabinets have custom-made hinges and hardware supplied through Elizabeth Scott Design Group. These ice box hinges resemble the hinges from old fashioned ice boxes, giving a nod to the historic era and to the homeowners’ dairy farming roots while adding a glint of jewelry to the white painted cabinetry.
